Treatment and Nutrition
Food is fuel, but when you're in the middle of cancer treatment, a healthy, balanced diet can seem like a challenge, especially on days when you're undergoing treatment. Though it can feel like a bit of a struggle, there are ways to ensure you get the energy and nutrition you need each day.
If you are finding it hard to fill your plate these days, here are some tips to consider when it comes to cancer treatment and nutrition:
Reduce Processed Meats
You may know that large amounts of processed meats (such as bacon, deli meats, hot dogs) have been known to increase cancer risk, but limiting them in your general diet is recommended for overall health, as they are often high in sodium.
If you are eating for energy, your best choice would be to choose lean proteins and meats instead, as protein helps repair body tissue and allows you to maintain a healthy immune system.
Try to Get Your Veggies In
When you're planning your meals, consider adding vegetables for the vitamins and fuel when times of hunger creeps up. If you have trouble digesting or stomaching things, consider adding them to a shake or switching up how you season them to help you get your daily dose of greens and vegetables in.
Before Treatment Options
On the days you are getting chemotherapy treatments, it's always best to consider lighter meals. Portions should be small but often, and fatty and spicy foods should be avoided. Yogurt, eggs and toast, cereal, or soup are good options. Depending on how long you'll be there, you
might want to pack small, bland snacks such as crackers or bananas are ideal, and be sure to keep hydrated, too.
Post-Treatment Options
The next few days might leave you with nausea and possibly no appetite at all. It's okay to eat light these days — be sure to drink plenty of fluids, though. Bland might be your best bet, and consider cold or cool foods. Gelatins, clear soups, and popsicles are all good options.
