Dr. Alec Goldenberg

Medical Oncology & Hematology

Alec Goldenberg, MD, is a board-certified hematologist-oncologist, with over 40 years of experience in cancer care and research. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Magna Cum Laude with High Honors, from Brandeis University, followed by his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Goldenberg completed his internal medicine residency and served as Chief Medical Resident at Bellevue-University Hospitals. He then pursued fellowship training in Medical Oncology-Hematology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he also completed research fellowships as both a Dana Foundation Fellow and National Research Service Award recipient. Dr. Goldenberg has held academic positions at New York University School of Medicine for over three decades, advancing from Assistant Professor to Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. He has served as Assistant Attending at Tisch University Hospital and was an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital for nearly 30 years. His leadership roles include directing the Hepatoma Study Group and the Hematology Clinic at NYU Medical Center.

Dr. Goldenberg has been a principal investigator in numerous clinical trials, including landmark studies on sorafenib and the global GIDEON registry for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Dr. Goldenberg has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at major oncology conferences. He served on the Scientific Advisory Board of Saladax Biomedical, Inc. and is a member of the American College of Physicians and American Society of Hematology. His dedication to advancing cancer care through clinical research and innovative treatment protocols has established him as a respected leader in oncology and hematology.

Dr. Goldenberg is also the inventor of the Snarecoil® bone marrow biopsy needle, developed to address the limitations of the traditional Jamshidi needle. With its innovative internal coil mechanism, the Snarecoil® improves specimen capture and retrieval, and physicians worldwide have adopted its use.
