Summer has a way of showing up whether you're ready or not: the heat, the long days, the neighbors firing up the grill. If you're in the middle of treatment, that can feel like a lot. It can also still feel like something worth showing up for.
Showing up for summer looks a little different during treatment. Cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy and radiation, can make your skin more sensitive to the sun during the summer. Meaning it may burn or become more easily irritated, even after a short time outside. You do not have to stay all season indoors to protect yourself. Start by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, and reapply it every couple of hours if you are outside. Lightweight, long-sleeved tops and wide-brimmed hats are practical and can be fun to wear. Try planning outdoor activities for early mornings or late afternoons, when the sun is less intense. These small changes can help you enjoy the outdoors safely.
Treatment can make it harder to feel thirsty or keep fluids down. Drinking water throughout the day, even in small sips, can help keep you balanced and may ease some fatigue and discomfort from treatment. If plain water does not appeal to you, that is normal and happens to many people. Try keeping a pitcher of water in the fridge with cucumber, lemon, or mint. The main goal is to support your body, so you have more energy for the things you enjoy this season.
When it comes to energy, moving your body during treatment is one of the best things you can do for yourself, even if it feels difficult. Gentle, regular activity can reduce treatment-related fatigue, boost your mood, and help you stay strong over time. This does not have to mean a strict workout routine. It could be a slow evening walk with someone you care about, a light swim on a warm day, or ten minutes of gentle stretching while listening to music you enjoy. The focus is not on intensity, but on consistency and finding joy. Even small amounts of movement remind you that you are still here, still living, and still capable, even on tough days.
This summer can still include cookouts, laughter, and quiet mornings on the porch. Cancer treatment is difficult, and that’s real, but it does not have to take the whole season away. You deserve to feel the sun, enjoy a cold drink, and take a gentle walk as the day cools down.
