Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

Early detection of pancreatic cancer can greatly improve treatment options and outcomes. The pancreas is located deep in your abdomen, behind your stomach, which makes it hard to identify changes during regular checkups. Still, paying attention to what your body is telling you can make all the difference.

Symptoms like ongoing abdominal pain that spreads to your back is a common early sign. This pain may start out mild and get worse over time, especially when you lie down or after you eat.

Losing weight without trying is another warning sign. If you notice weight loss that isn’t due to changes in your diet or exercise, talk to your doctor. Some people also lose their appetite or feel full after eating just a little.

Jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, can signal that a tumor is blocking the bile duct. You might also notice darker urine or lighter-colored stools. This happens when bile can’t flow properly through your digestive system.

Pay attention to changes in your digestion as well. If you develop diabetes as an adult, especially after age 50, it could be an early sign of pancreatic cancer.

Certain factors can raise your risk for pancreatic cancer. If you have a family history of this cancer or certain genetic conditions, regular checkups are even more important. Chronic pancreatitis, long-term diabetes, smoking, and obesity also increase your risk. If you have any of these risk factors, stay proactive with your care team.

If you notice any of these warning signs, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. These symptoms don’t always mean cancer, but getting answers early is always worth it. Your doctor can use blood tests, scans, or other tests to find out what is causing your symptoms.

Catching pancreatic cancer early means you have more treatment choices and a better chance for a better path. Take charge of your health and speak up if something feels wrong.
