Superfood Health Benefits

Superfood: A nutrient-rich food considered to be beneficial for one’s health.

Superfoods are mostly plant-based, but also include some fish and dairy. Blueberries, salmon, and eggs are just a few examples of foods that are considered “superfoods.” However, there are no set criteria for determining what is and what is not a superfood.

Foods that are high in antioxidants and flavonoids, as many superfoods are, have been shown to prevent coronary heart disease and cancer, as well as improve immunity and decrease inflammation. A high consumption of fruits and vegetables have long been associated with lowering risks of many lifestyle-related health conditions and mortality.

These foods can be incorporated into a healthy diet when available, and they do not require breaking the bank or searching the globe trying to find them. The secret is that any leafy green vegetable or berry commonly found in your grocery store will provide many of the same benefits found in the premium priced superfoods.

Research has shown that the ideal diet is one that is largely plant-based, with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthful animal products. Superfoods can be a good entry into healthy eating. While understanding the nutritional value of the food you eat can be enlightening, there are lots of healthy foods out there to explore, even if no one is calling them “super.”
